Burbank High Sends Four Distance Runners to CSUN

Social distancing may be something new. But four members of the Burbank High boys’ cross country and track teams have decided that the brotherhood they have developed as Bulldogs is too strong to break up and will continue for at least another four years.

Teammates Victor Goli, Dayne Ellis, Anthony Chiaravalle and Steven Wright have announced they will all run for Cal State University, Northridge.

The group helped Burbank finish fifth in the California State Division 1 Cross Country Championship in December at Woodward Park in Fresno. It was Burbank’s best finish since the state meet was implemented in the 1980s.

“Having the group of four going to CSUN is going to be a major impact because of the bond that we have. It is going to help us out a lot,” said Goli, who said the group plan to become roommates with one another.

Goli, who finished 14th individually in the state championship in 15 minutes, 20.7 seconds, said he and his teammates have continued to work out on their own despite the Covid-19 global pandemic.

Victor Goli (right) is headed to Cal State Nothridge.

“Right now we’re using an extended base to get a better summer,” said Goli, who did not want to completely stop running. “Taking that much time off would take a toll on your college career as well.”
In track, Goli ran 4 minutes 23.4 seconds in the 1,600 as a junior and began this season with a 9:23.70 in the 3,200 before the pandemic shut down his chance at breaking into the school’s elite top 10 in the 3,200, from which he just a second away from.

Goli said he had been hearing from CSUN early last fall and began to get more interested as time went on.

“In October he started reaching out to the other guys and they were like I really like this program and after (the) state (meet) he came out to our school and talked to us. He was a really cool guy,” Goli said of coach Jake Hurysz.

Ellis, who recently ran 9:27.2 in the 3,200, ran 15:54.4 in the state cross country championship as Burbank’s fourth runner.

Dayne Ellis

Chiaravelle ran his best cross country race in Fresno, where he placed second amongst his teammates, clearing the 5,000-meter course in 15:39.7. In track, he has run 9:50.03 in the 3,200.

“This opportunity is amazing to me because of the endless opportunities that came with (it). Not only am I doing what I love, but I’m doing it with my best friends from high school. So I am very excited to see what we can do from high school to college,” said Chiaravalle, who plans to major in criminal justice.

Anthony Chiaravalle

Wright ran 16:18.5 in the state cross country meet as Burbank’s sixth runner.  He has a best of 10:10.39 in the 3,200 in track.

“The truth is I couldn’t be more excited to continue to go to school with my best friends. It would not be the same if I had to leave them behind,” Wright said.  “This group of friends I am going with understand the same mind set when it comes to working hard and I think that’s going to help all of us go to the places we want to together. I could not be happier. “

Wright said the group has still maintained its fitness despite the current pandemic.
“We want to be healthy more than anything,” he said. “Since exercise is still allowed and we care about each other’s health, we run on our own. If we need to talk about anything we just text and ask each other.”

Steven Wright

At CSUN, the Burbank group will be joined by Burroughs grad Daniel Fendrich, who was his team’s top finisher at the 2019 Big West Championship.

The CSUN women’s team also features three locals in Burbank High grad Jamie Giammichele and Burroughs grads Heidi Elgio and Julianna Navarro.

A Look Back at the Best Teams of 2019

With a lot of talent in many sports at both Burbank and Burroughs highs, being a top 10 team out of the many there are in the city does not come without a tremendous amount of hard work and success. We take back a look at what we feel were the 10 best teams between the two schools during the 2019 calendar year. This includes winter and spring sports teams during the 2018-2019 school year as well as fall sports teams from the 2019-2020 school year.

No. 1 Burbank boys cross country

The Bulldogs may have not won a Pacific League title, but they are still deserving of the top honor. In the season finale, the California State Meet in Fresno, Burbank topped league champion Crescenta Valley, which had finished second in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 just a week earlier.
Burbank finished fifth in the Southern Section Division 1 championship and were the 10th best team in California (all divisions combined) in Fresno. Senior Victor Goli led the Bulldogs in rebounding from an injury plagued junior year. Fellow seniors Dayne Ellis, Anthony Chiaravalle, Steven Wright and Tadeh Shanazari will certainly have plenty of great memories to last a lifetime. Juniors Andres Leon and Tyler Jenkins will return next season in hopes of leading the next group of great Burbank runners.

No. 2 Burroughs boys volleyball

If any program in the city deserves the program of the decade award, it is clearly the Indians’ boys volleyball program. Burroughs has won 10 consecutive league titles under Coach Joel Brinton. Although the Indians’ record at 20-13 may not look overly impressive, Burroughs schedules a number of elite teams in nonleague matches and also plays in several top tournaments. The Indians were also relatively young last season. Kade McGovern had an outstanding sophomore season and has the potential to be as good as any player that has ever played for the Indians. Outside hitter Connor Burroughs is another top returner for 2020.

Niko Coccio

No. 3 Burroughs boys golf

The Indians finished second in the Pacific League, but made things very interesting because they gave traditional power Arcadia all it could handle. Burroughs even defeated Arcadia by 20 strokes in one league match at DeBell Golf Course. The good thing for Burroughs is that much of the team returns in 2020. Lincoln Melcher, who has committed to UCLA, was outstanding as a freshman and along with Kodiak Hernandez give the Indians a great 1-2 punch for two more seasons. Niko Coccio, Daniel Gonzalez and Ryan McGowan are expected back in 2020.

No. 4 Burroughs girls soccer

The Indians won their first league title since 1993 and finished the season 16-4-2. Senior Abbie Riggs as well as sophomores Lauryn Bailey and Lily Gonzalez played a key role in giving Burroughs the historic title. Burroughs lost in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs to Hemet.

No. 5 Burroughs boys soccer

A young Burroughs squad won the Pacific League title and the 11th time under longtime coach Mike Kodama. The Indians advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs, finishing the season with a 15-6-3 record. Sophomore Manny Gonzalez earned All-CIF honors as he scored 18 goals.

No. 6 Burroughs girls volleyball

The Indians went 18-6 overall and captured the Pacific League crown under veteran coach Edwin Real. Unfortunately, a tough playoff draw saw the Indians end their season in the first round of the playoffs against a very talented Murrieta Valley team, which entered the match with a 23-8 record.

Senior Lydie Grote led the way and signed a letter of intent with the University of California, Berkeley.

No. 7 Burbank girls cross country

Like the Burbank boys’ team, the Burbank girls’ cross country team finished second in the Pacific League behind Crescenta Valley. Also like the boys’ team, Burbank defeated the Falcons in their final head-to-head race, the CIF Southern Section Division 1 finals. Perhaps the greatest thing that happened to the team was the fact that star runner Mckynzee Kelley was able to survive a terrible car accident and actually return to the team. With a strong group of runners led by Kelley, Megan LaCamera, Elin Markarian, Zoe Zeron and Noela Kim, Burbank should be ready for another fine year in 2020.

Kiara Hernandez of Burbank High

No. 8 Burbank girls golf

The Bulldogs gave traditional power Arcadia a run for its money in the Pacific League title chase, only to come up just six strokes short at Brookside Golf Course. Burbank was led most of the season by freshman Lisette Orellana. The Bulldogs finished 11th in the tough Eastern Division in CIF competition and won the Optimist Tournament. In dual meet competition, Burbank posted a 28-7 season record. Sophomore star Kiara Hernandez joined the team late in the season after transferring from Burroughs. With her returning for the next two seasons, there is lots of reason for Burbank to be optimistic about the future.

No. 9 Burbank boys track and field

The Bulldogs came just one event away from winning the Pacific League dual meet title. Burbank had a solid group across the board and many return for 2020. Sprinters Bryan David and Jack Sapyta, middle distance runner Mher Matesvoyan and distance runners Victor Goli and Andres Leon led the way.

No. 10 Burroughs boys water polo

The Indians didn’t have a great regular season, finishing fourth in the Pacific League. But Burroughs earned itself onto this list because of its postseason play. Burroughs earned two CIF Southern Section playoff victories and nearly pulled off an upset of second seeded St. Francis in the quarterfinals, losing 9-8. Vahagan Sahakyan was one of the Indians’ key players.

Kelley Serves as Burbank’s Cross Country Victory

The Burbank High boys’ and girls’ cross country teams had visions of Pacific League titles in 2019.

Those visions didn’t produce any plaques to put in the school’s trophy case as Crescenta Valley won a pair of league titles Thursday at Arcadia County Park.

But what Burbank did come away with was something far more important than any league title.

The Bulldogs had the benefit of having Mckynzee Kelley. Kelley won the individual competition in the last league meet and would have been a favorite to win the Pacific League individual title. But on Thursday she finished 24th.
Kelley had just been cleared to run a day earlier after having missed the past week and a half following an incident that she was fortunate enough to live and tell. As she and friends were driving on Glenoaks Blvd. returning from her school’s Homecoming Dance, a driver suspected of being on drugs plowed into them. That driver was later arrested.

“I was happy that I was able to run with the girls and the team. I wanted to be there for them more than anything,” Kelley said. “I got a bruised lung and I hurt my back. I was really sore, so I was out for a week and a half.”

Burbank still finished second in the team standings with 42 points. CV won with 29. Burroughs was fourth with 98 points.

Burbank junior Megan LaCamera finished fourth overall, covering the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 8.9 seconds.

Junior Elin Markarian followed in 18:17.2 for fifth place and Burbank junior Zoe Zeron was eighth in 18:40.0.
Burroughs junior Jordan Guzman was ninth in 18:41.6.

Burbank junior Noela Kim was 12th in 18:59.8 Senior Sol Fernandez was 13th in 19:00.0.  Kelley finished in 19:47.7 and Burbank senior Cynthia Movsisian was 28th in 20:24.

For Burroughs, junior Kiara Cruz (18th, 19:21.4), senior Taylor Lombardo (22nd, 19:30.6), junior Briana Contreras (23rd, 19:44.8), senior Ceci Whitney (26th, 19:53.8), junior Patrycja Maciak (27th, 20:11.6) and junior Kaia Mouser (29th, 20:26.4) round out the rest of the squad.

In the boys’ varsity competition, finished second with 46 points, behind Crescenta Valley’s 36.

Burroughs finished fourth with 108.
Burbank junior Andres Leon finished fourth in 14:44.2. Senior Victor Goli followed in 14:44.6. Senior Dayne Ellis (eighth, 14:57.1), senior Anthony Chiaravalle (10th, 15:03.8), junior Tyler Jenkins (19th, 15:37.5), senior Steven Wright (21st, 15:38.8) and senior Tadeh Shanzari (27th, 15:56.5) round out the rest of the team.
“We trained for four years for things like this. It hurts that we’re not going to get that league title but it just wasn’t our day,” Ellis said. “We can still come back. We’re really looking forward to that state meet. We haven’t been there and this group of guys wants to get there.”

Burroughs was led by sophomore Mason Ortega, who took 17th in 15:31.2. Senior Trevor Villagran followed in 15:34.0.

Senior Robert McGraham (22nd, 15:39.0), junior Jimmy Nealis (25th, 15:48.0), senior Logan Berger (26th, 15:49.1), sophomore Jalen Leighton (29th, 16:01.7) and sophomore Chase Eldridge (32nd, 16:14.1) round out the rest of the Indians.

All four local teams have advanced to CIF competition and will run next weekend at Riverside Community College.

Burbank Cross Country Ready for Big Year

It is no secret that local cross country teams are continually competitive year in and year out.
But this year figures to a special one for the Burbank High boys’ team. There is no telling how good the Bulldogs can be. They return all seven of their varsity runners from league finals from a year ago and if healthy should finish their season in Fresno at the California State Championships. As hard as it might be to believe, Burbank’s boys’ team has actually never been to the state meet.

Burroughs, which won the CIF Southern Section Division 1 boys’ title in 2014, isn’t far behind.
Both the Burbank and Burroughs girls’ teams figure to fight for the Pacific League title after finishing first and second a year ago.

Burbank

The Bulldog boys’ team is looking to be healthy this year after struggling with that aspect a year ago.  The Bulldogs open the season ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 preseason poll. In track season, there were five Bulldogs who broke the 10-minute barrier in the 3,200 meters. This would be comparable to a starting five in basketball that all average in double figures in points.

Senior Victor Goli is coming off a fine track season after he was sick much of last cross country season.  Goli ran 4 minutes, 23.4 seconds in the 1,600 and 9:25.58 in the 3,200. Junior Andres Leon is running right alongside him. He went 4:26.81 and 9:42.18 as a sophomore.

Burbank High’s Victor Goli at the finish line last season.

Seniors Dayne Ellis (9:46.29), Anthony Chiaravalle (9:55.97) and Tadeh Shanazari (9:57.59) all went under 10 minutes in track. Senior Steve Wright (10:10.39) was not far behind. Junior Mher Matevosyan, who is a middle distance specialist, will also be in the running for a varsity spot. Matevosyan went 1:58.59 for 800 meters as a sophomore and 4:38.35 in the 1,600. Fellow junior Tyler Jenkins (4:42.05 and 10:07.77) should also see some time on varsity.

Senior Andrew Uhm and sophomore Damon Lovelace are also fighting for a spot on varsity.

“In a league with so many talented athletes and such knowledgeable, successful coaches, we always make it our goal to be in the top three and this year is no different,” Burbank coach Kathryn Nelson said. “We hope to advance our boys team into the CIF Finals and take a shot at making the State Meet this year.”

The Burbank girls’ team is coming off of a league championship season. The Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 9 in the CIF Division 1 preseason poll, were hit hard by graduation. However, they are still deep and should still be in contention for another league title.

Sol Fernandez is back for her senior year.  She ran 5:18.1 in the 1,600 last spring in track and 11:24.3 in the 3,200.

Sol Fernandez

Junior Mckynzee Kelley was the Pacific League frosh-soph champion in the 1,600, going 5:25.38.  Kelley (11:35.3 in 3,200). Elin Markarian (11:34.00 in the 3,200) was the frosh-soph league champion in cross country last year. Fellow juniors Megan LaCamera (12:19.49 as a freshman), Noela Kim (12:03.51), and Zoe Zeron (12:45.48) figure to play key roles on the varsity.
Senior Cynthia Movsisian (12:36.4 in 3,200), sophomore Kyalin Abarabar (13:12.92 in 3,200), senior Izzy Bittencourt (13:12.19 in 3,200) and freshman Joanna Camacho are also fighting for a varsity spot.

“We have a good group of juniors moving up to support Sol but staying healthy will be key,” Nelson said. “We have a very hard working class of freshman girls and we are excited to watch them grow in the program. Joanna Camacho has already broken into the top 10 coming out of summer and Clara Kim is not far behind.”

Burroughs

The Indians will be solid with the boys and girls teams.

Junior Jordan Guzman, who finished sixth in the Pacific League finals last year, will lead the way. Senior Ceci Whitney, who finished eighth in league, is also back. Sophomore Sophia Navarro, who was 10th in league finals, gives the Indians a solid top three.

Jordan Guzman of Burroughs

Sophomore Savannah Hernandez (12:14.6 in 3,200) will probably will the role of being fourth. Juniors Briana Contreras (12:46.45 in 3,200) and Kiara Cruz (27th in cross country league finals last year) should give the Indians enough to be serious league contenders.

Seniors Taylor Lombardo, Samanatha Hoxsie and junior Kaia Mouser are also in contention for spots on varsity.

“We need to work on closing the gap between our top seven runners,” Burroughs coach John Peebles said. “They are working hard and it is a long season, but we have to simply focus on getting better one day at a time.”

The Burroughs boys team is one that might surprise some people because they are quite good, even though everyone is looking at Crescenta Valley and Burbank. The Indians might actually be a year away from being the team to beat in league.

Junior Julian Largaespada was the Pacific League’s frosh-soph champion in the 1,600 (4:36.37).

Junior Jimmy Nealis (4:41.21 in 1,600) is also capability of big things.

Seniors Logan Berger (10:10.29 in the 3,200 in league finals), Trevor Villagran (10:18.30) and  Robert McGraham (10:46.46) are all solid veterans.

Sophomore Mason Ortega (4:50.62 in 1,600 in Buroughs-Burbank dual meet),  sophomore Jalen Leighton (4:54.49 in 1,600 in Burroughs-Burbank dual meet) and sophomore Chase Eldridge (hurdler, middle distance runner in track) will also battle for a spot on varsity.

“The boys are really working on the concept of pack running,” Peebles said.  “The path to success for the boys will be getting the pack to go together.”

Burbank Scores Big in Track and Field League Finals

Emma Cusumano has three years to go in hopes of breaking some of her older sister Hailey’s Burbank High records.
She is off to a good start. Thursday she captured a Pacific League titles and finished second in two more events in League Finals at Arcadia High.
“She’s proud that I’m trying for that,” Emma Cusumano said of Hailey Cusumano, who graduated from Burbank in 2017.

Cusumano won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 47.51 seconds. She finished second in the high jump at 5-0, to tie with Burroughs Kayla Wrobel for second. Muir’s Deniya Fields won, also jumping 5-0, by winning by virtue of attempts.
Cusumano finished second in the 100 hurdles in 16.9 seconds.
Burbank had a number of fine performance turned in by underclassmen.
Teammate Jayla Flowers was impressive in winning the long jump (16-9 1/4) and the triple jump (36-2). She was also on the second-place 400 meter relay team.
Junior Victor Goli won the 3,200 meters in a great battle over Burroughs Raymond Berrellez. Goli finished in 9:26.23, followed by Berrellez in 9:26.78.
Burroughs was led by Jada Martinez-Reese, who finished second in both the 100 (12.36) and 200 (24.9). The time in the 200 is a school record.
Eli Gault-Crabb won the boys’ pole vault by taking just one jump at 13-6.

Full meet results are below.

Burbank, Burroughs Track Finding New Stars

Both Burbank and Burroughs Highs have lost some key athletes to graduation, but that shouldn’t play a key role in the success of both schools this season.
The Bulldogs appear to be strong as a dual meet squad and the Indians appear to have found their next pole vault star.

Burbank
The Bulldogs won the boys’ league dual meet title last year and are hoping to duplicate the feat.
“That’s what we’re shooting for,” said David Card, who took over as head coach after serving as an assistant to longtime head coach Darin Wolf.

Burbank has a strong group of sprinters and distance runners that could go deep into postseason competition.
The spring group is led by junior Bryan David, a 400 meter specialist, who ran under 51 seconds last season. Freshman Jack Sapyta is one of the best sprinters to ever come through Burbank. He ran the 200 meters in 22.73 seconds last year with the Burbank Vikings.
Junior Cole Le’au is also back. The Bulldogs have picked up a transfer in Kendall Fauntleroy, who will become eligible in late March. Sophomore Dylan Branden is another sprinter to watch for.

The distance running group is led by sophomore Andres Leon and junior Victor Goli. They are supported by a host of others.
Senior Zion Chavez will be counted on to provide points in the long and triple jumps as well as in the pole vault. James Symth is the defending league champion in the discus and will provide some key points in the throwing events.
Sophomore Marcus Halm is solid in the jumping events and the hurdles.

On the girls’ team, Burbank appears to be in a position to compete for a league title.
“We have the depth and quality to challenge Arcadia,” Card said.
Sophomore sprinter Stephana Powell is a transfer from Van Nuys High and should be solid in the 200 and 400 meter events.
Sophomore Jayla Flowers could be on the best Burbank has ever had in both the sprints and in the long and triple jumps.
The distance running crew is very deep and led by senior Shalom Mejia and junior Sol Fernandez.
Sophomore Tamryn Betts is the returning league champion in the high jump.
Freshman Emma Cusumano has the potential to be a star like her older sister, Haleigh, who graduated from Burbank in 2017.

Burroughs

The Indians are not as deep as in the past, but still have a few elite individuals.
Sophomore Eli Gault-Crabb could be the next in a long line of pole vault stars.
He opened the season against Canyon High by clearing 14 feet, 2 inches.
Junior Caleb Black is an elite 400 runner for coach Levon Davis.
“Caleb, if he’s healthy, he might go 48,” Davis said.
Senior Raymond Berrellez along with junior Logan Berger and sophomore Jimmy Nealis give Burroughs a solid distance running group.

The Burroughs girls’ team is led by senior sprinter Jada Martinez-Reese.
Sophomore Elizabeth Surratt could have a breakout season in the 300 intermediate hurdles after going 47.57 in league finals last year.
Burroughs will rely on a solid core of a distance runners to get the bulk of their scoring from.
Sophomore Jordan Guzman, senior Lakely Nealis and freshmen Sophia Navarro and Kimberly Ramirez should make significant impacts.

A Look Back at the Best of 2018

The 2018 year in sports in Burbank was not the best, nor the worst on record. The best individual performances were in track and field, as Burroughs Jagdeep Chahal was the CIF Southern Section Division 1 champion in the boys 1,600 meters. Elizabeth Switzer led the Burroughs girls’ track team by qualifying for the state championships in the pole vault. Burroughs golfer Kiara Hernandez was also outstanding in being the best in the Pacific League. The following is a look back at the best teams that Burbank and Burroughs highs put forth in 2018.

10. Burroughs boys soccer
The Indians went 15-9-1 in 2018 and finished second in the Pacific League with a young core that was made up mostly of sophomores.
Carlos Rosales led the midfield and Carter Wells became the heart of the defense. Freshman Manny Gonzalez scored 16 goals, a program record under coach Mike Kodama. This group will get only better in 2019 and 2020.
9. Burroughs softball
The Indians finished runner-up to Crescenta Valley in the Pacific League standings. But Burroughs once again put together a solid season, finishing with a 14-5-1 record and advancing to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs. Pitcher Presley Miraglia moved to play at Cal State Long Beach.
8. Burroughs girls soccer
The Indians had a stellar season going 15-3-3 overall to place second in league. Burroughs won its first CIF Southern Section playoff game since 2009 with a wild-card victory over Brentwood School. Freshman Lauryn Bailey and junior Abbie Riggs were two of the Indians’ key offensive players. Olivia Cashman and Emily McHorney were two other top players.
7. Burroughs girls cross country
The Indians finished second in the Pacific League behind Burbank, ending a domination by Crescenta Valley and or Arcadia, that had won the league title every year for more than a quarter century. Burroughs also went on to advance to the CIF Southern Section finals. Sophomore Jordan Guzman and freshman Sophia Navarro led the way for a team that figures to have created arguably the most competitive rivalry with Burbank High of any in the city.
6. Burbank football
The Bulldogs turned in yet another fine season, even though they lost the league title to Arcadia. Burbank won every game it was expected to win and put together a fine 7-4 campaign. Seniors Matthew Porras, Erik Harutyunyan and Duncan Smith will definitely be remembered for the mark they left at the school and all are projected to play in college.

The Indians turned in another fine season in 2018, finishing with a 23-8 record and a share of the Pacific League title. The team was blessed with a solid freshmen core who are now sophomores, led by Faith Boulanger and Kayla Wrobel. This has consistently been one of the top teams in the city under veteran coach Vicky Oganyan and that doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon.
4. Burbank boys track and field

The Bulldogs captured the Pacific League dual meet title in coach Darin Wolf’s final season. Burbank counted on hurdler Sergio Aguilar, as well as a solid sprint crew led by Cole Le’au, Oladele Hospidales and Bryan David. Victor Goli led a deep and young distance running core.

The Indians had an outstanding season under coach Edwin Real. capturing the Pacific League title. Burroughs went 27-9 and reached the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section 3 playoffs, narrowly losing to eventual CIF champion Village Christian in five games. Juliana Van Loo went on to earn All-CIF honors. Burroughs figures to be strong again next year with Lydia Grote returning to lead the way.

The Indians won their ninth consecutive Pacific League title under coach Joel Brinton. Burroughs also advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, only to be eliminated by national power Loyola of Los Angeles. Diego Rosal and Cole Kaitz were the leaders for Burroughs.

1. Burbank girls cross country

Sol Fernandez

The Bulldogs won their first league title outright since 1978 and advanced to the CIF Finals, finishing 10th in Division 1. Burbank was led by senior Shalom Mejia and junior Sol Fernandez. Although this was an experienced group that will lose several top runners to graduation, there is a great group coming up replace those that will depart. Expect Burbank to be very strong again in 2019.

Burbank Girls Cross Country Wins League Title Outright

The last time the Burbank High girls’ cross country team won a league title outright, the year was 1978.
Despite the fine achievement, the Lady Bulldogs didn’t grab all the headlines as those went to Jeff Nelson, arguably the greatest high school boys’ cross country of all time.
Now four decades later, Nelson’s wife Kathryn, led the Bulldogs to their historic title, which was clinched Thursday in the Pacific League Finals at Crescenta Valley Park.
“I stood their crying for a second,” Kathryn Nelson said of the achievement. “(It was) a lot of hard work. They wanted it. We knew we could be competitive, but you have to show up in the race.”
The Bulldogs easily won by scoring 32 points. Burroughs finished second with 59 points. Both teams will advance to postseason competition. Burbank tied for a Pacific League title in 2014, but the Bulldogs never won a league meet in doing so.

Junior Sol Fernandez led the Bulldogs by clearning the 3-mile course in 19 minutes, 12 seconds.
“Our coaches told us it is not for you to grab, you are defending it,” Fernandez said. “It is a huge success for this team.”
Shalom Mejia finished third in 19:36.
Also for Burbank were Jamie Levin (seventh, 19:54), Megan LaCamera (ninth, 20:02), Mckynzee Kelley (11th, 20:06), Lydia Forsyth (13th, 20:11) and Natalie Danao (16th, 20:21).

Burroughs was led by sophomore Jordan Guzman, who finished sixth in 19:53.

Burbank finished third in the boys’ varsity competition with 85 points. Crescenta Valley won with 27 points. Burroughs, without injured star Raymond Berrellez, finished fifth with 110 points.
The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Andres Leon (eighth, 16:12). He was followed by Victor Goli (12th, 16:23), Tadeh Shanazari (15th, 16:37), Steven Wright (24th, 17:23), Dayne Ellis (26th, 17:29), Tyler Jenkins (32nd, 17:51) and Mher Matevosyan (36th, 18:07). All seven of Burbank’s runners are underclassmen.

Burroughs was led by the duo of Robert McGraham and Carlos Ponce. McGraham finished 18th in 16:52. Ponce was 19th, also in 16:52. Trevor Villagran was 20th in 16:55. Jimmy Nealis was 23rd (17:12), Johnny Padungyothee (30th, 17:38), Peter Lainson (33rd 18:00) and Logan Berger (39th, 18:30).

Burbank Girls Cross Country Wins Again

A season after finishing fourth in league, there wasn’t much hoopla over the Burbank High girls’ cross country team heading into this season.
But the Bulldogs showed once again Thursday afternoon that times have changed and that they are for real.
The Bulldogs won their second consecutive Pacific League meet, topping second-place Burroughs, 36-59 at Arcadia County Park.
For decades the league has been dominated by Arcadia and Crescenta Valley.
“We talk a lot about what it means to win. It comes down to hard work. They made the commitment to do it this summer,” Burbank coach Kathryn Nelson said of her team. “They took the Verdugos and ran every piece of the Verdugos that they could run.”

Burbank, which is ranked No. 10 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, was led by senior Shalom Mejia. She finished third overall, covering the flat three-mile course in 18 minutes, 5 seconds.
She was followed by teammates Sol Fernandez (fourth, 18:12), McKynzee Kelley (seventh, 18:33), Jamie Levin (ninth, 18:35), Lydia Forsyth (13th, 18:45), Megan LaCamera (15th, 18:58) and Natalie Danao (17th, 19:01).

In the boys’ varsity competition, Burbank finished third with 77 points and Burroughs was fourth with 97. Crescenta Valley won with 36 points.
Burroughs Raymond Berrellez finished third overall in 14:54.
Burbank sophomore Andres Leon led the Bulldogs by taking fifth in 15:00.

“The girls ran pretty solidly today,” Burroughs coach John Peebles said. “On the boys side Raymond ran a really good race. We’re still trying to pack with our two through six.”
