The City of Burbank along with Ice-America has teamed up for the third consecutive year to bring the winter tradition of ice skating to the sunny SoCal city of Burbank. The Rink is located directly behind City Hall at the corner of Orange Grove avenue, and Third street.
The Rink has been open since Dec 10th and will continue through Jan 3rd. “The Rink is a great fit for all types of people, young and old,” said Forrest Mckinnon, manager of the Rink. Whether you’re on a date, celebrating a birthday, hanging out with friends, or skating for the first time in your life, the Rink is a great place to do it all.
The Rink, like any other business, needs a staff to run it, which makes it a great opportunity for a job over the winter break. This year the Rink has employed 21 staff members which are made up of a variety of people ranging from local high school students to professional ice skaters such as Mckinnon. “We like people who skate, but we love people who are great with people, customer service is number one,” said Mckinnon when asked about what the Rink looks for when hiring their staff. “It’s all about making everyone happy, and keeping them happy,” said Mckinnon.
After skating at the Rink for the past two years, Callie Suppa, a Junior at John Burroughs High School thought that working at the Rink would be a fun thing to do after finals. Elizabeth Hernandez, the assistant manager of the Rink has been with Ice-America since she was 16. The 24 year old was originally hired as a high school student. Hernandez loves working at the Rink so much that she moves to Burbank every year so she doesn’t need to make the drive from Redondo Beach, where she lives. “I like putting on a show each year, we all work as a team to bring outdoor ice skating to an area that otherwise wouldn’t have it,” said Hernandez.
The Rink is open Sunday through Thursday from 10 in the morning til 10 at night, and Friday and Saturday from 10 in the morning til 11;30 at night. General admission to the Rink is $10, admission for children four years old or under is $4. The price for skate rentals is $4. All skaters are offered head protection free of charge.
All Skaters must fill out and sign a waiver prior to skating.
