An undefeated regular season is well within reach as the Midget Green Vikings (7-0) prepare for their final contest this Saturday against the Santa Clarita Apaches (1-6) at Burbank High School. The Vikings outscored their last two opponents by a combined score of 94-0 but they are still hungry for more. 
“We have been preparing for this moment for so long,” Coach Corey Enman said. “We just want to get the playoffs started.”
Whether it’s a kick-off return for a touchdown by Dante Coxsom or a bulldozing score by running back Loyal Terry, the Vikings will find a way to light up the scoreboard. Sebastian Leal will somehow be included in the scoring and there’s no denying Isaac Cordova a highlight or two on offense and defense.
Regardless, the Vikings are focused on the task at hand. First comes a conference championship on Saturday and then a possible deep run into the playoffs culminating with a Super Bowl title on November 17.
Only three teams have represented Burbank in the Pacific Youth Football League (PYFL) Super Bowl since the league began in 1993. All three teams were in the Senior Division but neither were victorious. The most recent Burbank representative played in Super Bowl XV in 2007.
“We are where we are right now because of the hard work we did in the pre-season,” Enman said. “We’ve been preparing for this moment since the year-end banquet last season.”
With some key additions and several returning players, the Vikings are poised and determined to build on last year’s success. While playing in the Bantam Division, the 2011 Vikings went 7-1 but made a first round exit in the playoffs. If all goes according to plan, this year’s Midget Green Vikings would face a familiar foe in the first round. The Santa Clarita Aztecs, a team they beat 28-14 in the first game of the season, will be their first round opponent.
Enman believes in preparing his players for the next level. He has them focused on the present but the skills and knowledge they pick up along the way will prepare them for football in high school. A Super Bowl title would be nice to add to the memory banks.
Including Saturday’s regular season finale, it will take four more victories to consider this season a true success, according to Enman. There are two rounds of playoffs before the title game and Enman and his coaching staff is prepared for any type of playoff scenario. They have video footage and scouting reports on all of their possible opponents not to mention a few tricks up their sleeve.
An undefeated regular season would be nice but the true goal is a Super Bowl title. This Saturday will be another step towards making a title become reality. Kick-off is 10:15 a.m.
