Just getting to the CIF Southern Section Division I cross-country preliminaries at Riverside on Saturday is an accomplishment.

Shining on that stage is even more impressive which Burroughs High’s Emily Virtue, who placed second in a time of 16 minutes and 58 seconds in the girls varsity run, and Justin Villagran, who was ninth (15:01), did with flying colors.

The Indians’ boys varsity grabbed second in their heat, while the girls varsity took seventh in their heat.

In fact, this is the second consecutive season the boys qualified for the CIF Finals, while it’s the first time for the girls since 2004.

Meanwhile, Jagdeep Chahal was 14th (15:10) in the boys varsity trek, while Timothy Wells took 16th (15:12).

Andrew Barrondo placed 21st (15:18), Chris Hoxsie garnered 36th (15:27), Adam Villalpando grabbed 60th (15:44) and Andrew Hoxsie snared 90th (15:58).

Aside from Virtue, Heidi Eligio was 40th (18:32), Teresa Perez placed 56th (18:48), Lakely Nealis finished 57th (18:48), Eileen Eckles was 57th (18:56), Sapphire Sandoval nabbed 93rd (19:32) and Jailene Diaz grabbed 123rd (20:07).
