Hundreds of members of the George Washington Elementary School community turned out for inaugural Family Math Night on Thursday evening, November 13. Students and their families ate dinner at the school and played mental math games using decks of cards and dice under the direction of math consultant Nancy Paulson.
“We had over 130 families attend!” commented Washington Principal Brandi Young. “It truly was an amazing night! This was our first Family Math Night and it was a huge success.”
Young used Title 1 Family Participation and Involvement funds to sponsor the event, which drew parents to the school to work with their children. The school hired a math consultant from Boxed Cars and One Eyed Jacks.
The Title 1 funds also paid for 10 teachers from the school to stay and facilitate the games at the different tables once Paulson taught and demonstrated the math game.
A small committee of teachers helped get free donations of food and items for the pre-math game dinner from Ralphs, Dominos, Gourmet Pizza Crust and Trader Joes, said Young. Raffle prizes were also given away including 20 items from Boxed Cars and One Eyed Jacks and 10 sweatshirts and jackets from Warner Bros. Studios.
