As advances in medicine have significantly increased the survivorship of pediatric cancer, it is increasingly important to address the potential long-term consequences of childhood cancer and support the life quality of pediatric cancer survivors. A key issue in pediatric cancer survivorship is educational attainment due to irregular school attendance and adverse effects on cognition and academic performance during and after cancer treatment. These cancer survivors have the same goals and aspirations as their peers, yet without adequate support and encouragement, they run the risk of experiencing struggles in pursuing higher education.

For three nights, the Luther Middle School production of Footloose, entertained and delighted the crowded auditorium, bringing to life the 1984 musical adaptation to the Burbank school’s stage. Directors, Stefanie Enokian and Anthony Redman worked on the show for three years and on January 19, 20 and 21, their efforts came to fruition.

On January 26th the Hope Conference Room at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center hosted students from the John Burroughs High School National Academy Foundation (NAF) Medical Academy.  Over a dozen hospital leaders from different clinical areas met with the high school seniors in round table discussions, followed by department tours.

It’s an intense John Burroughs High School varsity softball game. Catcher, Rachel Little, is engaged in the game, watching the field where her teammates are ready and in position. Their cleats are pressed into the field’s dirt, mitts up and ready, waiting for Little to call the pitch and end the inning. In the stands are parents, classmates, and a 10-year-old girl named Skylar Celli-Recht, holding a handmade “Go #2 Rachel” sign and cheering on her favorite player.
