Quick Thinking Saves The Life Of Three-Year-Old After Fall From Third Story Window

The life of a three year-old child could have changed forever at 5:35 p.m. Sunday afternoon, but the quick thinking of Konrad Lightner made the outcome bittersweet.

Burbank Police dispatched several units Code Three (Lights & Siren) to 401 N. Pass Avenue when they received a 911 call that a baby was dangling out of a third story window. Minutes later, the dispatcher told responding units that the baby had fallen and was entangled in some power wires under the window. While those police officers were responding, Burbank firefighters were also responding with rescue response consisting of an engine company, a truck company, paramedics and a battalion chief.

The emergency equipment all showed up nearly at the same time and they found the three year-old baby had actually fallen. Two Burbank residents, a husband and wife, who were moving from one apartment to another down the alley way carrying their mattress, looked up and saw what was unfolding.

Konrad and Jennifer Lightner said they saw the baby throwing stuffed toys out the window and they yelled for him to stop. But the baby climbed out the unsecured window to go after his toys while the Lighteners were moving the mattress.

They quickly dropped the mattress under the window to possibly break the child’s fall but he came tumbling out and got caught by some phone lines and froze for a moment. Then to Konrad Lightner’s surprise, the baby fell down to his awaiting arms. He actually caught the baby and then lowered him to the mattress below as his wife kept the dispatchers abreast of what was happening.

The mother and father who were in another part of the apartment heard the commotion outside and went running down stars.

Burbank firefighters and paramedics checked out the baby and did a quick assessment prior to transporting him to a local hospital where he was treated for some very minor injuries.

Firefighter Eric Rowley, who was one of the firefighters on the call and also this year’s ‘Burbank Firefighter of the Year,’ carries a Burbank fire department challenge coin. The coin is the same as those carried by soldiers since WWI and is given following brave acts and good deeds to fellow soldiers.

Rowley felt that Konrad Lightner’s quick thinking earned him his personal challenge coin and presented it to him with his thanks from the Burbank fire department.

Minutes later the mattress was picked up and several toys laid underneath. Firefighter Rowley offered to help Lightner and his wife carry the mattress to their awaiting U-Haul trailer down the alley.

Several emergency personal at the scene recalled just a couple of years ago when the same type of call happened and the life of that child was not as lucky.

Burbank Police report that they respond several times a year to kids falling from apartment windows. It’s a good reminder if you live above the first floor to take a moment to check your windows and screens and make sure they are secured.

This three year-old had an angel flying by yesterday and his name was Konrad Lightner of Burbank.
